Optics Bench Applet

Click on a button to select a type of object, lens, or mirror, then click on the black space to place the element at that spot. You can then drag elements around to move them. You can also drag the focal points to change the focal lengths of mirrors or lenses.

All mirrors start out as concave mirrors and all lenses start out as convex lenses. To change it to a convex mirror or concave lens, click on the mirror or lens, then click and drag one of the focal points. You'll see the lens or mirror change shape.

For each of the following situations, use the controls above to set up the elements as described. On your papers, draw a quick sketch of your setup and record the object size, image size, object distance, and image distance for each situation. Turn in your sketches when you are finished.

1. Use a convex mirror to make a virtual image 1/2 as big as the object.

2. Use a concave mirror to make a virtual image 3 times as big as the object.

3. Use a concave mirror to make a real image the same size as the object.

4. Use a convex lens to make a real image the same size as the object.

5. Use a convex lens to make a virtual image 3 times as big as the object.

6. Use a concave lens to make a virtual image 1/2 as big as the object.

7. Use a convex lens and a concave mirror to make a real image that is larger than and behind the object.
